Iberia Parish – Tropical Depression Harvey (shown below) has formed in the Gulf of Mexico. Our morning update from the National Weather Service follows. It is important to note that the forecast’s combination of heavy rainfall totals and high tides or storm surge raises the possibility of flooding as bad or worse than we experienced in August of 2016. From NWS Lake Charles:
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is monitoring Tropical Depression Harvey in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Harvey is expected to move northwest across the western Gulf, making landfall as a strong tropical storm or category one hurricane on the central Texas coast late Friday. After landfall, Harvey will slowly move further north towards southeast Texas. This will result in a dangerous flooding threat for southeast Texas and parts of southwest Louisiana.
This Friday through next Wednesday, we are expecting 10 to 15 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts of 20 inches possible in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. For central Louisiana and south central Louisiana, we are expecting 7 to 10 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts of 15 inches possible. This amount of rain will result in significant flooding across the region.
In addition, we are expecting a storm surge problem as well, starting late Friday into the weekend. This will likely require a storm surge watch for coastal sections of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.
Strong winds and isolated tornadoes are a smaller risk with this system, and can not be ruled out.
