IBERIA PARISH GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE

As a coastal Parish in central Louisiana, Iberia Parish is in the area most directly threatened by Tropical Storm Cindy.
The National Weather Service has forecast that Iberia Parish will experience Tropical Storm force winds of 40-45 MPH with gusts of 55-60 MPH. These winds will last from Wednesday morning,June 21st through Thursday morning,June 22nd. Between Wednesday and Thursday Iberia Parish will also receive between three and five inches of rain with up to ten inches of rain possible. Heavy rain bands could generate rainfall of up to 3 inches per hour. The National Weather Service has also forecast tides two to three feet above normal, which will impede drainage and contribute to flooding in Iberia Parish.
Iberia Parish is already experiencing wind gusts of 20- 30 mph ahead of rain bands which have begun passing over the Parish.
Iberia Parish Government, the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office and our municipalities began meeting in preparation for this storm on Sunday and have been meeting twice a day to review the weather forecast, actions being taken and any assistance or resources required. Both Iberia Parish Government and the City of New Iberia are providing sand bags to residents. The Iberia Parish Sheriff's office is providing inmates to assist residents with filling sandbags. Iberia Parish Government, Agencies and Municipalities have briefed their personnel and staged their equipment to be prepared for possible flooding and wind damage.
Due to the weather forecast, Iberia Parish Government and the Iberia Parish Courthouse will be closed on Wednesday,June 21st. Iberia Parish employees should check the Iberia Parish Government Website and the Facebook page for the Iberia Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness/911after 3PM on Wednesday for guidance on whether to report to work on Thursday,June 22nd.
