IBERIA PARISH GOVERNMENT PRESS RELEASE
M. Larry Richard
Parish President
Iberia Parish remains under a Tropical Storm Warning due to the approach of Tropical Storm Cindy in the Gulf of Mexico. Iberia Parish has not yet had any reported damages or flooding.
Due to the Tropical Storm,Iberia Parish Government and the Iberia Parish Courthouse will be closed tomorrow,Thursday June 22nd and will reopen Friday,June 23rd.
At 4PM the National Weather Service forecasted that Iberia Parish will experience Tropical Storm force (39+ MPH) winds and possibly heavy rains between 8PM tonight and midday tomorrow, Thursday 22 June. These winds could reach 40-45 MPH with gusts of 55- 60 MPH. This forecast calls for Iberia Parish to receive between three and five inches of rain tonight, with up to ten inches of rain possible under heavy rain bands, and dangerously high tides two to three feet above normal resulting in coastal flooding. Iberia Parish officials are particularly concerned about the possibility of heavy rainfall occurring during our forecast period of high tide tonight from midnight to 3AM. Heavy rainfall occurring on top of our forecast unusually high storm tide creates a risk of dangerous coastal flooding. Iberia Parish residents in areas subject to tidal flooding should be particularly cautious whenever driving tonight and are reminded to never drive through floodwaters, which can be deeper than they appear.
Iberia Parish Government, the Iberia Parish Sheriffs Office, the Iberia Parish Fire District, and our municipalities will continue to meet this evening to review updated forecasts and local and State storm preparations. Additional shifts of personnel are on duty and prepared to respond to any reported damages or flooding tonight.
Iberia Parish residents can find emergency related information from Iberia Parish Government at the Facebook page of the Iberia Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness/911 and at 232-HELP.
