PRESS RELEASE BY IBERIA PARISH PRESIDENT, M. LARRY RICHARD AND IBERIA PARISH SHERIFF, TOMMY ROMERO

After consulting with representatives of the National Weather Service, the Iberia Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness and our law enforcement and emergency response partners, WE ARE STRONGLY URGING AND REQUESTING THE CITIZENS OF IBERIA PARISH TO EVACUATE WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. STAYING IN PLACE IS NOT ADVISED FOR ANYONE LIVING SOUTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY 90 AND LOUISIANA HIGHWAY 14. If you need emergency assistance you may call911.

Hurricane Laura is a very dangerous storm whose weather models and predicted path are very similar to those of Hurricane Rita which caused major flooding and property damage in our Parish. The National Weather Service has described Hurricane Laura as a MAJOR CATEGORY

3 HURRICANE that would strengthen to a category 4 before landfall with the following consequences:

*WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES, DOWNED TREES AND DAMAGED HOMES AND BUSINESSES

*STORM SURGE OF 12-18 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL

*LIFE THREATENING FLOODING NOT JUST ALONG THE COAST BUT AS FAR INLAND AS FAR AS THE 1-10 CORRIDOR

*RAINFALL OF 5-l 0 INCHES WITH LOCALIZED RAINS OF AS MUCH AS 15INCHES

*FLOOD WATERS WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME DRAINING DUE TO THE STORM SURGE

IF YOU CHOOSE TO REMAIN BEHIND, YOU MAY FIND YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WITHOUT POWER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, UNABLE TO BE RESCUED AND PROVIDED WITH LIFESAVING ASSISTANCE OR LEAVE THE AREA DUE TO HIGH WINDS, FLOOD WATERS AND STORM DEBRIS.
