PRESS RELEASE IBERIA PARISH GOVERNMENT

Many of our citizens, especially those residing South of U.S. Highway 90 and La. Highway 14 and in low-lying areas along bayous, drainage structures, lakes and streams chose to evacuate before Hurricane Laura made landfall. As a result, unnecessary deaths and serious injuries were avoided. For that we are extremely thankful.

The stormwaters that we experienced will be slow to recede through the remainder of the week as winds are expected to continue from the South. Many of our local waterways are at or near capacity and more rains are being predicted through Monday of next week. Therefore, I urge you to use extreme caution as you begin to contemplate returning to your homes and businesses that may have been damaged by flooding, winds or storm debris. Avoid traveling through flood waters because even small amounts of moving water may cause one to lose control of their vehicle. Be on the lookout for damaged utilities and contact the proper authorities to help determine when turning utilities back on is safe. Properly discard wet and contaminated insulation. Minimize contact with dirty water and thoroughly wash and disinfect clothes, linens and hard surfaces. Proper cleanup is essential after a flood.

Be careful and remain safe.
