From Iberia Parish President M. Larry Richard – Here is the latest tropical weather update for our area. This will be the last special update for tropical systems unless something new develops.
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is monitoring Tropical Storm Hermine, expected to make landfall in northwest Florida late tonight. It could become a hurricane before landfall. Flooding is the main concern due to the heavy rains and storm surge. The only local impact from this system continues to be the above normal tides. There could be minor coastal flooding this afternoon between 2 pm and 5 pm. In addition, drainage of the Mermentau, Vermilion, and Teche continue to be impacted due to the high tides.
Elsewhere in the tropics, Hurricane Gaston is continuing to move away from the US. A weak broad low pressure system has a low (20%) chance of developing into a tropical cyclone by early next week near the eastern Caribbean.
