Parish President Ernest Freyou has issued a proclamation dated May 6, 2011 declaring a State of Emergency due to the threat of flooding in portions of Iberia Parish. The National Weather Service has issued flood alerts along the Mississippi River with predicted river crests well above flood stage. Due to this, the Corps of Engineers has indicated that they will put in a request to open the Morganza Spillway as early as Thursday, May 12,2011.
The opening of spillway would be gradual, both from engineering reasons and to create a gradual rise in the Atchafalaya Basin that will allow wildlife to seek high ground. Based on current river forecasts, the spillway would remain open from a minimum of 7 days to possible 3 to 4 weeks.
I encourage any resident who has a camp or home in the basin area to pay close attention to the news media outlets and to begin protecting their belongings from the possible high water.
Iberia Parish is working very closely with St. Martin and St. Mary Parish officials in the event those parishes would require assistance in equipment and personnel. All resources have been put on alert and stand ready should assistance be requested.
