Responsibilities Include but Not Limited To

Under regular supervision, performs skilled mechanical work using, making, and repairing machinery and tools. Reports to the Maintenance Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Checks with the supervisor for jobs of importance.
  • Tells the supervisor what jobs are being worked on from previous day.
  • Ensures equipment is able to leave yard to preform daily job duties.
  • Goes to job sites; repairs machinery if needed.
  • Supervises inmates on daily job duties, as needed.
  • Answers repair calls for Parish equipment that has broken during the job.
  • Travels from various sites through the Parish to repair equipment.
  • Preforms diagnostic procedures on vehicles/equipment in order to determine necessary repairs or maintenance.
  • Repairs assigned mechanical defects such as hydraulic, electrical, air conditioning, tire, drive train, brakes, steering, transmission, and related systems.
  • Preforms minor and major repairs and maintenance on Parish equipment and other vehicles or equipment including changing tires, adjusting headlights, changing spark plugs, adjusting or replacing fan belts, and minor motor tune-ups.
  • Performs bodywork including such duties as sand blasting, undercoating, priming and painting, and making fiberglass repairs.
  • Is responsible for various preventing maintenance duties such as changing oil, fluids, belts, hoses, tires, filters, etc. and performing greasing, cleaning, and other routine tasks.
  • Receives and /or reviews various records and reports such as information from supervisor on equipment, information from other employees, and various other records, reports, memos, correspondences, etc.
  • Refers to repairs manuals, part books, policy and procedures manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Operates, a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as tractor, bull dozer, excavator, etc.
  • Uses of variety of tools such as sockets set, combination wrench set, hammer, torch, welding machine, etc.; a variety of supplies such as starting fluid, oil, grease, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Maintenance Superintendent, Operators, inmates, parts counter personnel and the general public.

Minimum Training & Experience

Requires a technical college diploma in automotive / diesel repair, with two to three years of experience as a mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license.
