A very cold air mass will move into the area Sunday, bringing freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions. Temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s on Sunday and Monday nights, and into the teens on Tuesday night. Wind chills could drop into the teens to single digits on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The NWS Lake Charles has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Iberia Parish from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday. “A Winter Storm Watch means that snow and/or sleet accumulations leading to significant impacts are possible.”

Total snow accumulations of 3-5 inches are possible from I-10 to the coast, with roads, especially bridges and overpasses, likely becoming slick and hazardous.

As this winter storm approaches, it’s important to take steps to stay safe and prepared. Keep in mind the 5 P’s of cold weather preparedness:

  • Protect People: Ensure everyone stays warm and has proper clothing.
  • Protect Pets: Bring pets indoors or provide adequate shelter and warmth.
  • Protect Plants: Cover outdoor plants or bring them inside.
  • Protect Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Practice Fire Safety: Use heaters safely and avoid overloading electrical circuits.

Plan ahead and stay safe during this winter weather event!
