The National Weather Service Lake Charles has extended the area-wide Flood Watch until 7:00 AM Thursday, June 18, due to a multi-day tropical system. Flooding risks will increase daily as rainfall stacks up, and future extensions to the watch are possible.
-
Today (Tuesday): Widespread storms will produce heavy downpours with rain rates of 1.5 to 3.0+ inches per hour as a possibility, capable of causing street flooding.
-
Wednesday: A temporary lull in rainfall coverage and intensity is expected.
-
Thursday & Friday: A second, more intense wave of tropical rainfall will arrive, bringing a renewed round of torrential downpours and a possible additional 3 to 5 inches of rain.
-
Coastal Flooding: Coastal low pressure moving inland may cause coastal flooding later in the week.
-
Severe Weather: Waves of storms also carry a marginal risk for isolated tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds over 58 mph through Thursday.
Iberia Parish OHSEP is also monitoring a developing disturbance in the northwestern Gulf. Here is the quick breakdown of the latest National Weather Service briefing:
-
Current Status: A broad low-pressure system over south Texas is moving northeastward and is expected to emerge over the northwestern Gulf tonight.
-
Development: Conditions are marginally conducive for this system to organize into a short-lived tropical storm late today or Wednesday.
-
Formation Chance: There is a 60% chance of tropical formation over both the next 48 hours and the next 7 days.
