As temperatures drop, it’s important to stay safe and protect yourself and others from the dangers of extreme cold. Cold-related illnesses like hypothermia and frostbite can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Knowing the signs and taking immediate action can save lives.
See a doctor immediately or go to the emergency room if you or someone you know has these symptoms:
HYPOTHERMIA
- Shivering or fumbling hands
- Exhaustion or drowsiness
- Confusion or memory loss
- Slurred speech
- Bright red, cold skin or very low energy in infants
FROSTBITE
- Redness or pain in any skin area
- White or grayish-yellow skin area
- Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy
- Numbness
Remember, the Warming Center at the Robert B. Green Veteran’s Memorial Building in New Iberia is available as a safe, warm place during this cold weather. Stay vigilant, take precautions, and look out for one another during this time. Together, we can keep our community safe.
