As temperatures drop, it’s important to stay safe and protect yourself and others from the dangers of extreme cold. Cold-related illnesses like hypothermia and frostbite can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Knowing the signs and taking immediate action can save lives.

HYPOTHERMIA

  • Shivering or fumbling hands
  • Exhaustion or drowsiness
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Slurred speech
  • Bright red, cold skin or very low energy in infants

FROSTBITE

  • White or grayish-yellow skin area
  • Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy
  • Numbness

Remember, the Warming Center at the Robert B. Green Veteran’s Memorial Building in New Iberia is available as a safe, warm place during this cold weather. Stay vigilant, take precautions, and look out for one another during this time. Together, we can keep our community safe.
