NWS Lake Charles weather update: 2 pm Wed 5.3.17

The National Weather Service is continuing to issue warnings for the flash flood and severe weather event this afternoon.

Heavy rains have produced 3 to 6 inches of rain in parts of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana this morning, with localized amounts as high as 10 to 11 inches in parts of Calcasieu Parish. Region-wide, an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected between 3 pm and tonight before the rain ends. Locally higher amounts of 5 to 6 inches is possible along and south of the US 190 corridor across southwest and south central Louisiana. This will result in additional or new flooding.

In addition, we have had several reports of large hail and damaging winds across southeast Texas and southwest, central, and south central Louisiana this morning. Additional large hail and damaging winds will be possible later this afternoon and evening region-wide.

The precipitation will be ending from north to south later tonight. The timing for the end of the rain will be 8 pm to 11 pm for east Texas, 9 pm to midnight for southeast Texas and central Louisiana, 10 pm to 1 am for southwest Louisiana, and 2 am to 5 am for south central Louisiana.
