Iberia Parish President M. Larry Richard Update From NWS - 8/24/2017 For more information contact: Prescott Marshall
Iberia Parish – Here is this morning’s forecast for Tropical Storm Harvey. Note that the storm track shows this system possibly re-entering the Gulf of Mexico as a Tropical Depression on Tuesday. In our call the NWS couldn’t speculate on how likely it was that this system could re-enter the gulf and head our way, but they did say if this occurred that the system would arrive in our area late next week. The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is monitoring Tropical Storm Harvey, forecast to become a hurricane today and make landfall early Saturday on the central Texas coast, possibly as a major hurricane.
Local impacts will be delayed due to the timing of this event.
Rainfall totals will be 7-15 inches for southeast Texas, 7 to 10 inches in southwest Louisiana, and 5-7 inches in central and south central Louisiana. Most of this rain will occur starting Sunday, and continue into next week. Expect to see flooding during periods of heavy rain.
Storm surge will peak during Saturday morning, and continue through Saturday evening's high tides. Water will be 1 to 3 feet above ground level for coastal sections of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, and 1 to 2 feet above ground level for coastal sections of south central Louisiana.
Winds will be 25 mph and gusty late Friday night into Saturday morning for coastal sections of southeast Texas and southern Louisiana.
The tornado threat will be very minimal through this event.
