Iberia Parish President M. Larry Richard Weather Alert from NWS - 8/21/2017 For more information contact: Prescott Marshall
Iberia Parish – This afternoon’s National Weather Service (NWS) forecast for a possible Category 1 hurricane landfalling on Friday in Texas is below. In addition to as much as 14 inches of rain here from Friday to Sunday, in a worst case scenario there is the potential for a hurricane surge here reaching as far inland as LA Hwy 14 and US Hwy 90 when the storm makes landfall (see image below). We will participate in two conference calls with the NWS tomorrow and will provide updates after each one. FROM NWS:
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is monitoring the remnants of Harvey. It is currently moving over the Yucatan Peninsula, and will move into the Bay of Campeche tonight. It will likely develop into a tropical depression on Wednesday, and strengthen potentially into a category one hurricane by landfall on Friday on the central Texas coast.
What this means for us locally is a heavy rain and storm threat predominantly, with wind and tornadoes being a lower end threat. Up to seven inches of rain is expected Friday through the weekend, with the potential for over 14 inches. This has the potential to be a dangerous flooding event. The storm surge will also come into play, with portions of Jefferson and Orange counties, as well as Cameron, Vermilion, Iberia, and St. Mary parishes under the risk Friday |
